The applied mathematics concentration is designed for students interested in the practical application of mathematics to devise solutions to a wide range of problems related to human activity. Students will acquire the skills to use mathematical modeling in the service of a whole range of enterprises ranging from hard sciences, engineering, computing and simulation (including design of computer or data science algorithms), machine learning, economics, finance and trading, linguistics, probability and statistics, social sciences, management, medicine, sports and more. The concentration requires students to take the following mathematics courses: Calculus sequence, Differential Equations, Partial Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Programming 1 (offering through the T.J. Smull College of Engineering), and either Physics 1 or Theory of Computation. In addition, students are required to select three electives from a robust list in consultation with their advisor and an additional three electives that align with their intended specific area of application. Particularly attractive electives include Number Theory and Cryptography, Optimization, and MATLAB Programming and Fractals. Upon graduation, students will have a skill set and knowledge that is in demand to a variety of career paths. They will have the ability to provide appropriate mathematical models, effective solutions and valuable consulting skills to a wide range of industries.
