Theatre Auditions

All students wishing to major in musical theatre must be accepted to the program through departmental auditions. All students wishing to major in Entertainment Design and Production must be accepted to the program through departmental interviews. Students wishing to major in theatre may audition or interview to be considered for a talent award.

Please note, the same audition/interview also can qualify musical theatre students and entertainment design and production students for consideration for a talent award (annual scholarship).

Students interested in pursuing a minor in dance must also audition in order to be considered eligible for a talent award.

There are two options for completing your audition:

On-site audition on the ONU Campus (see dates below)
Chicago or New York Unifieds (see dates below). Note: Participation in Unified auditions requires a pre-screen process submitted through "GetAcceptd."

ON-SITE AND UNIFIEDS AUDITION DATES

Register below for one of the on-site audition dates, New York Unifieds, or Chicago Unifieds. On-site auditions are conducted at the Freed Center for the Performing Arts on the ONU campus.

Pre-Screen On-line Submissions

Unable to attend an audition at the ONU campus? To participate in one of our off-campus auditions at places like the New York or Chicago Unifieds, you must submit a pre-screen audition through the GetAcceptd website. Upon approval of your pre-screen audition, directions and next steps will be sent for you to secure an audition at our off-site locations.

ONU's Musical Theatre Audition Requirements are in accordance with the 2024-25 GetAcceptd guidelines for the Common Prescreen. Musical Theatre pre-screen and live audition song and monologue requirements are the same.

Song Requirements
(This aligns with Option C in the common prescreen song requirements)

Choose one of the following options based on which one serves you best:

Option A: One 32-bar cut of a song written before 1970 (musical theatre, Golden Age, pop, hip-hop, folk, rock, rap, soul, country, punk, etc.). One 32-bar cut of a song written after 1970 (musical theatre, Golden Age, pop, hip-hop, folk, rock, rap, soul, country, punk, etc.). This song should contrast the style of the first selection.

Option B: One 32-bar cut of a musical theatre song from any time period. One 32-bar cut of a song of your choice from any time period and in any style that best suits you (musical theatre, Golden Age, pop, hip-hop, folk, rock, rap, soul, country, punk, etc.). This song should contrast the style of the first selection.

A 32-bar cut is industry standard language for about 60 seconds of a song. For live auditions on campus, students should be prepared with clearly marked sheet music in a 3-ring binder. Please avoid high glare page protectors or single sided music, and bring sheet music in the correct intended key. For live auditions at Unified auditions, students should be prepared with their sheet music as well as a speaker and their recorded accompaniment.

Monologue Requirements
(This aligns with option A in the common prescreen monologue requirements)

One monologue from a published (or written by a professional writer) play. A professional writer is someone whose plays have been produced, but may not have been professionally published.

Dance Requirements
(This aligns with option B in the common prescreen dance requirements)
Show us your best version of dancing or moving.

Ballet Requirements
(This aligns with option B in the common prescreen ballet requirements)
Ballet is optional.
- The interview provides an opportunity to discuss your experience and career goals with our faculty.
- Your experience is best shown through a portfolio (can include photos, programs, technical drawings, reviews, etc.) and a résumé.
- Those without formal portfolios should prepare to discuss their experience with the faculty.
- Portfolio reviews and interviews can be completed on campus during one of our three on-campus dates or by separate appointment (in-person or virtual).

Audition
- Prepare two contrasting monologues. Each monologue should be no more than two minutes in length.
- One selection may be, but is not required to be, classical. Shakespeare is permitted.
- Please bring a résumé and photograph to leave with the audition team.

Interview
- When interviewing for all other areas of study (playwriting, theatre history, theatre administration, dramaturgy, technical theatre, etc.), bring whatever reflects your experience thus far, and be prepared to discuss your experience and career goals with our faculty.
- Please bring a résumé and photograph to leave with the audition team.
- Prepare a short dance (no longer than two minutes) that demonstrates your technique, musicality and phrasing in dance. This may be ballet, jazz, modern, tap or any other style depending on your training and experience. The choreography may be your own or someone else’s.
- A Bluetooth system will be provided for your audition. Please bring a device of your choice that can connect via Bluetooth. Additionally, an auxiliary cord will be available as needed.
- Professional dance attire is expected (leotards, tights, ballet slippers, etc.).
- There will be a dance call led by one of our instructors.
